The Pharmacy Council has announced plans to implement stringent measures aimed at curbing illegal pharmacy services and practitioners, with the goal of upholding acceptable standards in pharmaceutical practice.
Dr. Daniel Amaning Danquah, the acting Registrar of the Pharmacy Council, revealed that the Council would undertake a crackdown on unlicensed facilities, peddlers, and individuals offering services beyond the scope of their licenses. This initiative, he stated, would be carried out in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, Food and Drugs Authority, and other security agencies to ensure compliance and promote public health and safety.
Dr. Danquah made these remarks during a meeting with pharmacy operators, pharmacists, and over-the-counter medicine practitioners in the Western Region, held in Takoradi. The gathering served to introduce Dr. Danquah as the acting Registrar of the Council and seek stakeholders' support for the successful implementation of the National Electronic Pharmacy (e-pharmacy) platform, designed to enhance service delivery.
Highlighting the importance of enforcing practice standards, Dr. Danquah emphasized the need to address challenges arising from non-compliance. He cited instances where individuals operated without proper licensing or provided pharmaceutical services beyond their authorized scope, posing significant risks to public health and safety.
The Council, Dr. Danquah stated, would take decisive action against those found to be operating illegally, including revoking licenses for those exceeding their approved scope of practice. He urged pharmacy practitioners to collaborate with the Council in promoting adherence to standards for improved service delivery.
Additionally, Dr. Danquah cautioned the public against patronizing services offered by illegal pharmacy practitioners, emphasizing the associated risks to health and well-being. He advised against purchasing medicines from peddlers and unlicensed operators to safeguard against potential health complications.
Regarding the e-pharmacy platform, Dr. Danquah highlighted its role in enhancing transparency, quality service delivery, and operational efficiency within the pharmaceutical sector.
Mr. Richard Asante, Western Regional Manager of the Pharmacy Council, commended Dr. Danquah for his visit and reiterated the Council's commitment to upholding acceptable practice standards. Participants at the meeting expressed appreciation for the engagement, noting its relevance in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements governing their operations.
The Pharmacy Council's proactive measures underscore its dedication to maintaining integrity and safety standards within the pharmaceutical industry, ultimately safeguarding the health and well-being of the public.
