The Rebecca PICU at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has significantly enhanced child healthcare, saving the lives of over 56% of children who visited the facility in the past four years. Established under the Rebecca Foundation, the PICU provides emergency care for children under 12, with a focus on advanced facilities and equipment, including ventilators.

The PICU has been instrumental in saving the lives of about 79 children, and over 700 neonates and children under 12 years have received care at the facility. Equipped with state-of-the-art building technology, the PICU has contributed to efficient healthcare delivery and created a comfortable environment for patients and healthcare professionals.

Mrs and Mrs Arya Ali, the Guyana counterpart, visited the PICU and the Sunshine Hostel, which houses children with . The Sunshine Hostel, also constructed with assistance from Mrs Akufo-Addo, has contributed to reducing the treatment abandonment rate from over 40% to less than 15%.

The PICU and Sunshine Hostel have become essential components of child healthcare at KBTH, offering advanced care, reducing mortality rates, and improving outcomes for children with critical health conditions. The naming of the PICU after Mrs. Akufo-Addo reflects the hospital's appreciation for her dedication to children's health needs.

The First Lady and Mrs Ali's visit aimed to assess the current conditions of the facilities and ensure they continue to serve their intended purpose. Mrs. Akufo-Addo donated air conditioners to the PICU and provided food and consumables to the Sunshine Hostel during the visit.
