Strike by Teacher Unions leads to school shutdown in Greater Accra Region

Several basic schools in the Greater Region have shut down today in compliance with the nationwide strike declared by three Teacher Unions.

The Ghana National Association of (GNAT), National Association of Graduate (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-Ghana) declared the strike due to the government's failure to address their conditions of service.

During a visit by the to selected schools, it was observed that many schools were fully complying with the strike directive. However, there were variations in the level of compliance across different institutions.

At Bishop's Girls' Basic School in the Metropolis, teaching activities were ongoing with teachers and pupils in full attendance. The head teacher, Madam Dorinda Quaye, stated that she only learned about the strike through a text message in the morning and chose to stay to ensure teaching continued smoothly, especially since many parents were unaware of the strike.

Meanwhile, at Private Odartey Lamptey Cluster of Schools, teachers were observing the strike, leading to the suspension of teaching activities. Most teachers were absent, and pupils were seen outside playing.

Similarly, at Osu Presby Girls 1 Basic School, although pupils were present, no teaching was being conducted.

In the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) Southern Cluster of Schools in Teshie, teachers were also observing the strike. At LEKMA 1 Junior High School, teachers were present, but teaching was halted. One teacher explained that despite being at school, they were complying with the strike directive and would continue to do so based on instructions from their Union Leaders.

The strike by the Teacher Unions has significantly impacted school operations in the Greater Accra Region, with varying degrees of compliance observed across different schools.
