Tricycle operators in the have intensified their protest against the Metropolitan Assembly‘s (KMA) decision to restrict their movement within parts of the Central Business District (CBD).

The operators, commonly known as “pragya” or “aboboyaa,” took to the streets and blocked a major road leading to Kejetia, causing disruptions to traffic and daily activities.

The KMA's ban on tricycles from the CBD aims to tackle traffic congestion and enhance pedestrian safety. However, the tricycle operators argue that this decision would adversely affect their livelihoods and lead to job losses.

The operators are demanding a reconsideration of the ban and constructive dialogue with their representatives to find a solution that balances their interests with the city's traffic challenges.

Police were deployed to manage the situation and ensure public safety during the protest.

The Pragya Workers Association of Ghana's leadership questions the KMA's reasons for the movement restrictions, expressing concerns about increased risks and exposure to danger for tricycle operators.

The KMA began implementing the directive on July 25 to address congestion in 's metropolis, signalling its commitment to reorganizing transport services in the city.
