UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres advocates deep reforms for global governance at WEF 2024: Ghana News

(UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for substantial reforms in the global governance architecture to rebuild trust among nations.

Speaking at the 2024 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Guterres emphasized the need for an updated system, stating, “We cannot build a future for our grandchildren with a system built for our grandparents.”

In his address, Guterres highlighted the alarming levels of inequality and injustice and identified geopolitical divisions as a significant risk affecting the global economy.

He expressed concern about the collapse of global norms, leading to a lack of trust. Guterres emphasized the necessity for deep reforms to global governance to manage geopolitical tensions in a new era of multipolarity.

Guterres mentioned the systematic undermining of principles and standards and criticized countries and companies pursuing narrow interests without considering the common good.

He stressed that rebuilding trust requires more than slogans and public relations campaigns, urging substantial reforms.

The UN Secretary-General disclosed plans for a Summit of the Future in September, focusing on essential reforms to the global financial architecture, including addressing challenges faced by countries in the Global South.

The reforms will also target the UN Security Council and propose a New Agenda for Peace to prevent and resolve conflicts, rebalance geopolitical relations and provide developing countries with a proportionate voice on the global stage.

Ghana's President, Nana Addo Dankwa , has been a vocal advocate for UN reforms, emphasizing the outdated structure, especially regarding the UN Security Council.

Guterres affirmed the UN's commitment to engaging in efforts this year to bring the global governance architecture up to date.

The Secretary-General concluded with optimism, stating, “I am confident we can build a new, multipolar global order with new opportunities for leadership, balance, and justice in international relations.”

The 2024 WEF opened with a call for global cooperation to address diverse challenges, including geopolitical tensions, global growth, and the potential of (AI).
