University of Ghana Alumni initiates projects to support alma mater

The University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGAA) is rehabilitating the Children’s Ward of the Legon Hospital to enhance healthcare delivery.

The association is in collaboration with Multi-Media Group is also renovating the Volta Hall Reading Room of the University.

The project which is expected to be completed in September this year will see the transformation of the hall to the standard already set by the association.

Mr Richard Obeng Okrah, Chairman of the association, disclosed this at the association’s Annual General Meeting at Legon in Accra.

He said the association had also instituted the Alumni Prize for students who excel in Humanities, Science and Business Administration in their Second Year of studies.

Mr Okrah said the association had already completed the renovation of the Jubilee, Legon and Commonwealth Hall Reading Rooms adding that the flagship platform being put in place by the association with Stanbic Bank Ghana will be completed by the end of the year t enable the association to enhance its fundraising structures.

He said the association had not been without challenges, adding that key among these was driven by the Covid-19 pandemic from which no corporate body was able to vaccinate itself.

‘It derailed a number of our initiatives and it is expected that with the gradual return, not normalcy we will be able to implement fundraising activities such as the VC and Friends Fundraising Dinner as well as operationalise our plans for restarting our membership drive at Regional levels and to extend our International reach beyond the USA and the United Kingdom, he said.

Mr Okrah commended corporate bodies such as the Bank of Ghana, EPP Books Services, Stanbic Bank Ghana, ZeePay Services and Nyonyo Foundation for their continued support for the association.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University commended the association for their continued support for their alma mater.

She expressed the hope that the relationship between the association and the university would be rationalized to ensure the rapid development of the institution.

The association elected new executive officers to steer the affairs of the association for a two-year term.

Miss Doris Adwoa Kissiwa Ansah, a Journalist and a Communication expert, polled 43 votes as against six by Mr Godfred Edusei Derkyi, a Banker to win the Chairperson position.

Other executives who went unopposed were Professor Yaw Oheneba Sakyi, First Vice Chairman, Mr Joseph Boakye Danquah Ampofo, Second Vice Chairman and Torgbui Seth Albert Francis Nyonyo, General Secretary.

Others were Dr George Tsey Mensah Kwadzo, Treasurer; Dr Felix Addo, Elected Member; Mrs Adelaide Mary Benneh, Elected Member; Mrs Alexina Naa Ahima Arthur, Elected Member; and Dr Adrain Nii Odoi Oddoye, Elected Member.
