Richard Appiah, the accused individual in the infamous Abesim murder case, is still undergoing a psychiatric examination, according to Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister.
Speaking at a media briefing in Sunyani, she urged the bereaved families to remain calm, assuring them that justice would prevail.
Appiah was arrested in October 2021 for allegedly killing Louis Agyemang and Stephen Sarpong, aged 12 and 15 respectively, in Abesim, a suburb of Sunyani.
He has been standing trial at the Kaneshie District Court, which has ordered a psychiatric examination of the accused based on the advice of the Attorney-General.
Madam Owusu-Banahene described the murder as “monstrous” and stated, “Appiah is undergoing serious psychiatric evaluation and examination to ascertain his mental faculty.”
She further revealed that she had held meetings with the Inspector General of Police and the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, ensuring that the prosecution process was progressing steadily.
Regarding security, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is working diligently to improve the security situation in the region. Madam Owusu-Banahene urged the public to provide support in this endeavor.
She stressed the importance of vigilance, avoiding walking alone at night or in isolated places, and reporting individuals with suspicious behavior or unusual movements to the security services for apprehension and prosecution.
Meanwhile, residents of Abesim and the surrounding area have appealed to the judiciary to expedite the prosecution of the accused person.
