Since 2011, the MTN Ghana Foundation, the Corporate Social Investment arm of MTN Ghana, has been actively involved in collecting blood donations to support the national blood bank and various regional hospitals across the country. Mr Obed Adu-Amankwaah, the MTN Area Manager for Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions made this announcement in Sunyani.
Last year alone, the Foundation successfully collected and supplied regional hospitals with 6,440 units of blood, surpassing its target of 5,000 units. For the current year, the company aims to collect 7,000 pints of blood, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana, particularly in maternal care.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Adu-Amankwaah underscored MTN's dedication to improving healthcare access, highlighting the importance of initiatives like blood donation drives. These drives, held at the Sunyani Senior High School and Twene Amanfo Senior High/Technical School compounds, enabled eligible students to voluntarily donate blood.
The annual blood donation exercise, initially launched on Valentine's Day in 2011 and now known as the “Save a Life Blood Donation Exercise,” is a flagship project of the MTN Ghana Foundation. This initiative encourages voluntary blood donation to replenish blood banks nationwide, reflecting MTN's commitment to brightening the lives of Ghanaians.
This year's blood donation drive targeted the collection of 900 pints of blood from students in six selected senior high schools across the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions. Similar exercises were held simultaneously at other schools in these regions, including Akumfi Ameyaw SHS, Buoyem SHS, Ahafoman SHS, and Bechem Presbyterian SHS.
Healthcare remains one of the core focus areas of the MTN Foundation, with a commitment to allocating resources to improve healthcare access for all.
