Mr George Tettey, the Gbetsiley Organiser of the Abel Group Foundation, is advocating for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to overcome stigmatization and strive for self-improvement. As a disabled individual himself, Mr. Tettey understands the challenges faced by PWDs due to societal perceptions and discrimination.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Tettey highlighted the widespread stigmatization and discrimination that PWDs encounter, leading to exclusion from social activities, isolation from friends, and limited job opportunities. He shared his own experiences of facing stigma when seeking assistance for his education but emphasized the importance of overcoming fear and seeking empowerment.
Mr. Tettey's journey of empowerment began when he approached the Social Welfare and Community Development office in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality for assistance. With their support, he ventured into mobile money vending to finance his education, demonstrating the potential for PWDs to thrive with empowerment and opportunities.
Encouraging others in similar situations, Mr. Tettey urged PWDs to break through societal barriers and take advantage of existing policies and programs designed to improve their lives. He emphasized the need for empowerment and inclusive policies to enable PWDs to surpass limitations and achieve their full potential, benefiting not only themselves but also their families and communities.
Mr. Tettey's advocacy serves as a reminder of the resilience and capabilities of PWDs when provided with support and opportunities, challenging stereotypes and fostering inclusivity in society.
