The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has underscored the importance of traditional authorities in driving national development and called on them to actively participate in the progress of their respective areas.
Speaking at the Wilaa Festival of the Takopo Traditional Area, Speaker Bagbin urged chiefs, queens, and elders to engage openly with the government on development issues. He emphasized the significant role traditional authorities play in Ghana's body politic and as custodians of the country's resources.
Highlighting concerns about the country's development, Speaker Bagbin expressed worries about issues such as land degradation, inadequate nutrition for school children, and a lack of sincerity and respect for elders. He attributed these challenges to the erosion of cultural and traditional values.
Quoting the Greek philosopher Socrates, Bagbin emphasized the importance of introspection among leaders and the need to align their actions with the country's development goals.
Touching on the theme of the festival, “Unity, Peace, and Development,” Speaker Bagbin stressed the role of festivals as catalysts for sustainable development and peacebuilding. He urged all stakeholders to actively participate in community issues and contribute to the development of Takpo Traditional Area.
Bagbin commended the Takpo community for their commitment to celebrating the Wilaa Festival for over twenty-six years and pledged his support for the area's development. He specifically called on the government to grant community mining licenses to enable responsible mining activities in the area, leveraging its rich gold resources.
